The NFB BELL Academy provides children with Braille and nonvisual skills instruction through fun, hands-on learning activities. The NFB BELL Academy—which stands for National Federation of the Blind Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning®—is a nationwide (United States and Puerto Rico) summer program that prepares blind and low-vision children to grow into confident and independent blind people who live the lives they want.

NFB BELL Academy is appropriate for blind and low-vision children, ages 4-12, who:

Do not receive enough Braille and nonvisual skills instruction in school
Could benefit from more Braille exposure over the summer
Would enjoy connecting with blind role models

Session Selection

This application is to apply to attend our VIRTUAL NFB BELL Academy In-Home Edition Program. This summer, using the Zoom® web-conferencing platform, one three-week session will be offered July 18, 2022 through August 5, 2022 Monday through Friday, for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Each accepted student will receive the materials to complete all lessons and an NFB long white cane. An optional Social Hour will be offered for one hour. Our Social Hour will be a place to gather on Zoom for casual conversation, games, exercise and more!

The deadline to apply is June 1, 2022.

This application is only for our NFB BELL Academy In-Home edition. If you wish to apply for both programs (in-home and in-person) you must complete both applications.

The NFB BELL Academy In-Home Edition is a virtual program. The sessions will be recorded via Zoom. If selected, you are welcome to send us your photos and videos of your child’s participation in the program. Do you give permission for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to use your and/or your child’s image or likeness in materials produced by the NFB for promotional and educational purposes or for any other purpose and in any manner and medium, including, but not limited to, the following: print materials, websites, social media and news media? - Optional
