NFB BELL Academy

The NFB BELL Academy provides children with Braille and nonvisual skills instruction through fun, hands-on learning activities.

I could go on and on about what an impact BELL has had in our family’s lives, but I will leave it as, ‘the impact is huge.’

The NFB BELL Academy—which stands for Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning—is a nationwide summer program offered by the National Federation of the Blind that prepares blind and low-vision children, ages four through twelve, to grow into confident and independent blind people who live the lives they want.

A boy wears sleep shades and exchanges money with an NFB BELL Academy instructor.    An NFB BELL Academy student climbs a rock wall with her mentor.    A young girl holds a white cane, puts her feet in the water, and smiles.

Activities are provided in a day program or residential setting, depending on location. In addition to Braille crafts, games, and other engaging projects, children learn vital independent living skills, interact with blind adult mentors, and enjoy field trips to sites related to the NFB BELL Academy curriculum. Through these activities and interactions, the children learn that blindness or low vision does not define them or their future.

He learned he can make his own meals and has been asking to pack his own lunch ever since.

We encourage blind and low-vision children who do not receive enough Braille and nonvisual skills instruction in school, or who could benefit from Braille enrichment over the summer, to apply. NFB BELL Academy typically runs Monday through Friday for six hours each day for two weeks.
